Wedge confirms Smoak will rejoin team on Tuesday

As I suggested earlier today on the blog, Justin Smoak will join the team Tuesday in Detroit after dealing with his father’s funeral tomorrow in North Charleston, S.C.

Manager Eric Wedge just met with the media prior to tonight’s game against the A’s and confirmed that Smoak would be back when the Mariners open a three-game road series against the Tigers.

Keith Smoak died Tuesday at the age of 57 in South Carolina, shortly after Justin was placed on the bereavement list in order to fly home to be with him. Justin will remain with the family through the weekend and then fly to Michigan on Monday.

“I talked to Justin yesterday and we’re going to give him the time with his family and have the closure he needs to have before he comes back,” Wedge said.

Wedge said the 24-year-old first baseman is doing as well as could be expected.

“He was OK,” Wedge said. “I think we’ve all been through this in some shape or form. What he’s trying to do is just take care of his family.”

The skipper said there was nothing new yet on center fielder Franklin Gutierrez, who is still at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., being evaluated for his ongoing digestive tract problems.

“They’ve taken a lot of tests and are evaluating all the information and we should have something for you in the next day or two,” Wedge said.

Milton Bradley returns to the lineup today after recovering from what Wedge called one of those “24 hour things” that caused him to be scratched from Thursday’s 1-0 victory over the A’s.

Here’s today’s full lineup:

It was definitely a dandy of a game to watch and I savored every monent of watching the Prince Pineda pitch Live for me for the first time. I brought my 4 kids down to see it and we enjoyed our front row view in the new Bullpen area to watch him warm up. The kids exitement was matched by my own and we all enjoyed the moments this night brought us to the fullest!
