Morales gets first start today at first base
Kendrys Morales will make his first start of the spring at first base today as the Mariners go for their seventh straight win when they host the Rangers at 12:05 p.m. MT (1:05 p.m. PT) at Peoria Stadium.
Morales has played only DH to this point and gone 2-for-8 in three games, hitting a pair of sharp singles to the opposite field in his last outing Wednesday against the Indians.
Both Morales and Michael Morse will play today, with Morse in right field. Neither of the two new boppers have hit a home run yet, which isn’t all that surprising given it’s early. What is surprising is the Mariners lead all 30 Major League teams this spring with 14 home runs so far … without Morales or Morse even included.
We’ll see if the long-ball parade continues today against the Rangers, who are starting former Cubs right-hander Randy Wells, who is trying to land a job as a non-roster invite.
Here’s the Mariners lineup:
Dustin Ackley 2B
Jason Bay DH
Kendrys Morales 1B
Michael Morse RF
Michael Saunders CF
Kelly Shoppach C
Carlos Peguero LF
Robert Andino 3B
Brendan Ryan SS
James Paxton P
Coming up tomorrow, Hisashi Iwakuma makes his second start of the spring and is scheduled to throw two innings against the Dodgers in Peoria. Jeremy Bonderman will follow with another two innings, then Oliver Perez, Kameron Loe, Charlie Furbush, D.J. Mitchell and Chance Ruffin.
New left-hander Joe Saunders makes his first start Sunday in Surprise against the Rangers after throwing an inning of relief in his debut. He and Hector Noesi are both slated for two innings in that one, with Josh Kinney, Carson Smith, Jonathan Arias, Danny Farquhar and Bobby LaFramboise also on the slate.
All these weekend games are on live radio at 710 ESPN Seattle. The first televised game will be Monday against the Rockies at 12:05 p.m. PT.
