Morales to hit cleanup tonight; Montero sent down

Designated hitter Kendrys Morales reported to the Mariners on Friday and was immediately put into the starting lineup in the cleanup spot for their 7:10 p.m. PT game against the Orioles at Safeco Field.

Morales was acquired from the Twins on Thursday in a trade for Minor League reliever Stephen Pryor. Manager Lloyd McClendon said the 31-year-old will play mostly DH as well as a little first base, while hitting behind Robinson Cano in the Mariners batting order.

Designated hitter Jesus Montero was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma to make room for Morales on the 25-man roster.

Montero played Thursday after being recalled from Tacoma earlier in the day to fill in until Morales’ arrival. He went 0-for-3 in the 4-0 loss to the Orioles and is batting .235 (4-for-17) with a home run and two RBIs in six games in two brief stints with Seattle this season.

The 24-year-old has hit .310 with 23 doubles, 15 home runs and 69 RBIs in 80 games with Tacoma, including a .420 average with seven home runs and 29 RBIs over his last 21 games.

Greg,
Just read your post about the Mariners seeking a right handed OF bat. If they got that, who would that replace. Who would lose playing time or be traded?
Saunders is the best outfielder now, and while he’s left handed, he hits lefties as well as righties. His good base running is also an asset. He’s been unlucky with two trips to the 15 day DL this year, but he’s shouldn’t be called “injury prone” like Guti.
The problem, is Hart and Morrison and Smoak. Jack Z doesn’t want to admit to his failures here and can’t trade them. I’d be focused on a right handed bat at 1st base.
Best regards
Bill

In the best of all possible worlds and thinking only of the guys on the Ms´ roster, Morales and Montero should be in the lineup. One of them would have to play first base, probably Montero, whose fielding puts me in mind of Dick Stuart, the immortal iron glove of yore. It´s a horrible prospect, they´re both lousy athletes but they can hit, and this is a team that has been averaging 2.2 runs a game in the last twenty games.

Hart hasn’t hit and morales hasn’t hit, Smoak was getting better and is good at first base. the other two should be sent away somewhere…
